Brother Anthony: A Man Who Dug In

A profile of Anthony Perkins, Freedom Village, Georgia

Every community worth its salt has a few people who hold it together. They're the ones who show up early, stay late, and don't wait for somebody else to fix what's broken. Here at Freedom Village, Georgia, one of those men is Anthony Perkins, known to all of us simply as Brother Anthony.

A Long Way From California

Brother Anthony is a native of California. Five years ago he made the move out here to the village, and he came with the kind of attitude you don't see every day: a plain, steady conviction that he could do it.

He didn't spend long settling in. Not long after he arrived, he set up shop. He bought old lawn mowers, used equipment, and solar panels, and then he went to work learning how to repair them, operate them, and put them to good use maintaining Freedom Village.

Learning the Hard Way, and Learning It Right

I'll be honest with you. He stumbled a bit early on. Most of us would have. Land work out here doesn't come with a manual, and the red clay doesn't care where you're from.

But Anthony is persistent, and persistence pays. Over time, he taught himself:

  • Small engine repair, bringing worn-out machines back into working order
  • Proper chainsaw handling, so a tree comes down safely and where it's supposed to
  • Land clearing, using nothing more than a lawn mower, a machete, and a weed whacker

Anybody who has tried to clear Georgia brush by hand will tell you that last one takes real backbone.

Earning His Keep

Living on the land is one challenge. Supporting yourself while you do it is another. Anthony worked that out, too.

He makes regular runs into Atlanta, driving for Uber on the way in and taking DoorDash orders on the way back out, so he's earning the whole time he's on the road. It's a practical, self-reliant approach, and it's exactly the kind of thinking that makes a life out here possible.

A Producer Who Picked Up a Wrench

Before any of this, Brother Anthony was a film producer, and he still has considerable skill in that line of work. But when the strikes hit the film industry, the work dried up, and that came right on the heels of his move to the village.

A lesser man might have packed up and gone home. Anthony didn't bail out. He dug in, and he did it well.

Today he's what you'd call a Renaissance man, and he has become a fixture at Freedom Village. All of us rely on his knowledge, his spirit, and his energy to keep this place maintained and livable.

Your First Call in the Village Builder

As a committed citizen of Freedom Village, Brother Anthony will be among the first people you can call on through the Village Builder to upgrade your land, maintain it, and increase its value.

He is now responsible for the Freedom Village equipment, including:

  • The sawmill
  • The brick-making machines
  • The rest of the village's heavy equipment

When you're ready to turn your plans for freedom into something you can build on, he'll be the man to call.

A Word of Thanks

Brother Anthony, we appreciate you. Thank you for your work, your grit, and your example. We're proud to have you here, and we're glad to call you a Freedom Citizen.
